Prioritizing Your Health

We’ve all done it. We make a commitment to exercise, sometimes pinned to a resolution or upcoming wedding or other appearance in public. And then after a few days or a few weeks of work, something comes up and three or four visits per week turn into one or two, and then one or none. Why? Because something else has become more important, more pressing, or more attractive.

To put this in perspective, consider for a moment how you prioritize going on vacation. If you knew you had an early morning flight to catch to get to some amazing destination, you set multiple alarms, pre-book a cab and basically re-arrange your life so you catch your flight. Why? Because the alternative is potentially missing your entire vacation. So why not prioritize your workouts the same way?

By “vacationizing” your workouts, you make a commitment that the workout is so important that you will re-arrange other things to make them happen. If you don’t like the vacation perspective because you haven’t been on vacation in a decade and that is a bit of a sore spot for you, compare it to a new job with a strict boss. You make sure you are there, on time, ready to go because the consequences are severe enough that you don’t even want to chance it.

This all makes sense in the short term, but the real challenge begins in the long-term when “real life” catches up to you and other obligations seem to overshadow your workouts. Rewire your thinking and make exercise as much a part of your life as getting up in the morning and brushing your teeth. “Real life” won’t be able to overshadow your workouts because they are just as important a part of your life as anything else, and in some ways, more important.

Beyond re-wiring your own brain, if you still need assistance, then the next logical solution is to work with a coach or personal trainer who can assist you with it and keep you accountable to your commitment. It is not a competition to see who can do it by themselves the most. It is about getting the workouts in so you can live the best life you can for as long as you can. The destination is absolutely worth it!
