The Power of Routine

Strategically Organized Repetition

Zig Ziglar, one of the most famous motivational teachers of his time, was once quoted as saying, “Repetition is the mother of learning, the father of action, which makes it the architect of accomplishment.” This simple but powerful adage suggests that, if we repeat something over and over, we will accomplish what we want. While I agree with the late Mr. Ziglar, I would add that one must repeat the right things over and over (and the elimination of the wrong things) to accomplish what we truly desire, or risk accumulating success in the wrong areas.

Routine, or strategically organized repetition, is a seldomly spoken of staple of success, and one that, when leveraged, can be the foundation upon which you build the life you want for yourself, family, and community.

If you were to ask 100 successful people, the vast majority would tell you they have a routine that they follow. When embraced, the right routine can create consistency that encourages momentum towards one’s goal. Consider the following routine: Wake up, drink water, perform 20 minutes of yoga and meditation, eat a healthy breakfast, prioritize schedule with anything that came through overnight, and get on with the day.

While this routine may work for some, it may not work for others. You may employ a routine that shifts everything later in the day, or re-shifts email prioritization to early morning. There is no magic routine that will work for everyone, but a study published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology looked at 367 university students and found that those who got up earlier were more proactive, got better grades, got better jobs, performed better, and garnered higher wages. Early morning risers typically get more done because more of their day takes place while the majority of people are still asleep, resulting in fewer interruptions and distractions.

To make the most of a powerful routine, take a step back from your life and what you want and ask yourself the question, “If I were the most successful person in the world and embraced a routine to get from where I am to where I want to be, what routine would I use and, specifically, what time would I go to bed, what time would I get up, and how would I organize my day?”

The answer to that question can be a turning point in your life and accelerate your success.
