The Distillery Family Yoga Series

In years past OmT.O. yoga festivals were one day – usually a Sunday. And if you missed it…you missed it. This year things are a little different. In conjunction with the Historic Distillery District, OmT.O. presents the Distillery Family Yoga Series! Here are the details:


What is it? 90 minutes of free kids’ outdoor yoga classes Sunday mornings throughout the Summer. Each Sunday morning, two family-oriented free outdoor yoga classes will be led by the most dynamic and popular family yoga instructors from the top studios in Toronto. These classes are rain or shine.


Who can participate? Yogis aged 7-12 from across the GTA (and their parents/guardians) can participate in either of 2 specially themed 40 minute free outdoor yoga classes taught by the top family yoga instructors in the city.


When is it? The series will start on June 2 and run every Sunday through to August 25th, with the exception of July 28th. The classes are 40 minutes in length. The first starts at 11:00am. The second class starts at 11:50am. The classes will be different each weekend, but the two classes each Sunday will be the same.


Where is it? As in year’s past, these free yoga classes will take place outdoors, in the heart of the Historic Distillery District. You’ll be rolling out your mats on the cobblestones right on Mill Street. The Historic Distillery District is accessible via TTC or by car, with parking lots adjacent.


Why is this series so awesome?! Like all OmT.O. events, these classes are all free. All you need to do is sign a waiver which will be provided on site, roll out your mats and have fun. We want families to experience yoga outdoors in an amazing urban setting together. To make sure that your experience is the best it can be, we have the top kids’ yoga instructors in the city leading these awesome fun-filled classes: Dana Chapman, Rishma Malik and Laura Bianchi.


Dana Chapman Dana brings her unique background in both Education and Yoga to her work with children. She was a classroom teacher with the Toronto District School Board for more than twelve years and she completed her Masters of Education at UBC. It was through managing this work and some personal challenges that landed Dana in her first Yoga class almost 20 years ago. Since then, a disciplined daily practice has inspired and supported her work with children and adults, leading naturally into the study of Holistic Nutrition, Reiki, Yoga, and Yoga Therapy. She is a Yoga teacher, a certified member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists, and a mom to baby Nate. She has created and facilitates a Kids’ Yoga Teacher Training and leads an annual programme called A Year of Mindfulness for teachers and parents.


Rishma Malik Toronto based Yoga Instructor Rishma Malik (E-RYT 1000 & E-RCYT), has been living, breathing and teaching Yoga for over 10 years. Her classes are uplifting, engaging and energizing yet grounded in the calm soothing power of release and mindfulness. Rishma infuses her classes with serenity, joy and empowerment and brings a wealth of ongoing experience as a student of “life”, together with her desire as a teacher to help people nurture self-connection, balance, strength and abundance in their lives. Rishma Malik is a senior-level Yoga Instructor registered with the Yoga Alliance. She is trained in the Himalayan Yoga tradition and received her formal 1000-hour Yoga Master certification at Sananda Devi Yoga in 2004.  She is also a registered kids’ yoga teacher with the Yoga Alliance and holds 200-hour certification in kids’ yoga (E-RYCT), followed by yoga therapy and pre-natal certifications under the direction of many accomplished yoga teachers.


Laura Bianchi Laura studied at Yoga Therapy Toronto with Ante & Felicia Pavlovic. Since then, she has been facilitating yoga classes and meditation at non-profit organizations, foundations like Ronald McDonald House Charity, Gilda´s Club and FCG Refugee Centre. Also, she gives private and group classes, yoga for family, yoga for kids and for corporate executives.
