I got it from my Mama!

A Holistic Approach to Skin Care

Moms give us so many gifts: life, love, support and something we always tend to forget – our genes. Some genetic gifts (like your brunette hair) are more obvious, while others (like your skin and skin concerns) are a little more nuanced.

Celebrate your mother and her gifts to you with some expert advice.  As a Skin Sage, I look beyond the skin conditions my clients bring to me and analyze their skin to understand what might be causing concern. Factors to consider include physical characteristics, psychological aspects like a person’s beliefs or behaviours and even their genetics.  This holistic approach gets to the root of issues to figure out the most effective solutions. When any skin type is treated properly it can be beautiful, naturally. Love the skin your mama gave you and cater to its needs with these simple suggestions:

Thick, Oily Skin: People with this type of skin tend to have robust health and are blessed with beautiful features. Don’t neglect skin care because you have been blessed with moist, hydrated skin.  Adapt your skincare to the weather and balance its moisture with hydrating ingredients.

When younger, a hydrating serum and light oil are good options. When you gracefully glide past 40, switch to a light- or medium-weight moisturizer. This skin type is prone to acne, but don’t punish your skin with harsh remedies like tea tree oil or drying cleansers and exfoliants. Instead, reduce the appearance of acne with a gentle purifying mask and spot treatment like detoxifying Green Clay.

Sensitive, Combination Skin: You’re blessed with a natural glow so treat your beautifully sensitive skin gently. Make sure your skin is always hydrated to avoid chronic redness and enlarged pores.

A good routine would include a hydrating serum with skin-loving ingredients like Sea Algae, Aloe Vera and Chamomile.  Follow with a light hydrating face oil with cooling, calming oils like Babbasso, Jojoba or Coconut. If you experience inflamed, even angry skin, calm it by keeping it hydrated and protected from heat and sun exposure with a Rosewater spritz and mineral sunscreen.

Thin Delicate Dry Skin

Your skin needs all the nourishment it can get. Start with a three-step moisturizing regime:

  1. A serum with powerful skin hydrating ingredients like Collagen, Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramide.

  2. A rich, warming face oil like Argan, Pumpkin or Sesame.

  3. Protect all this moisture with a rich rejuvenating cream with healing ingredients like Lanolin, Shea Butter and Aloe Vera.

As you age, your skin can often look tired and that’s the time to step up your skincare.   Opt for long-term dramatic results with a facial treatment like Intense Pulse Light (Photo Rejuvenation Facials) or Sea Salt Microdermabrasion.  Each of these tried and true methods can quickly improve skin’s appearance by helping rejuvenate collagen production and smooth skin.

Skincare is simple.  Enjoy the gift you are blessed with and gratefully make the best of it!
