6 Habits for a Better Morning



You want to feel better in the morning, don’t we all! I’ve had a hard time waking up since I can remember, and have made it my personal mission to figure out how the heck to start my day feeling as vibrant and energized as possible.

When I have a conscious morning routine, I feel energized during the day and am usually in a great mood.  Louise Hay has said, “How you start your day is how you’re going to live your day. And how you live your day is how you live your life.” So here are six habits that will help you to feel your absolute best and start your day off right. If you’re pressed for time, start with just one and gradually add in others.


1. Gratitude and Positive Visualizations

Instead of just hopping out of bed first thing upon waking, try staying still for a few minutes. Smile. Take this time to think of what you’re grateful for. Practicing a moment or two of gratitude sure beats that feeling of angst about the day ahead. Another trick I’ve learned is to say to yourself, “something amazing is going to happen today.” Who doesn’t want to get out of bed for something amazing?

2. Pump Up the Music

The effects of music on the brain cannot be underestimated. Who doesn’t love to bounce around to music first thing in the morning? Classical, jazz, easy listening, classic rock, heavy metal, hip-hop, country? It doesn’t matter what kind of music you put on. It just matters that it gets you bopping around.

3. Water with Lemon

There are so many benefits of drinking a glass of water with the juice of half a lemon. It helps to wake you up, alkalinizes your body (which is in an acidic state when you wake up), flushes out toxins, encourages bile production, which aids in digestion, helps to freshen your breath, clear your skin, reduce coffee cravings, and promote elimination.

4. Skin Brushing

This is one of the best things you can do for yourself, before you get into the shower. Skin brushing stimulates lymphatic drainage, detoxification, makes your skin super smooth, and actually helps to wake you up. Start at your feet, and vigorously brush up towards your heart.

5. Take a Power Shower

Hop into that shower and sing your heart out as you play with the hot and cold settings in your shower. Alternate between hot and cold each minute or two during your shower; go from as hot as you can stand to as cold as you can tolerate. This is what’s known as a “contrast shower”, and the hot and cold temperatures will leave you energized, help to oxygenate your cells and stimulate circulation.

6. And Finally, Breakfast

A morning isn’t complete without an awesome breakfast. Whatever you like to eat, it’s best if it’s nutrient dense and has some protein. Smoothies are one of the easiest ways to accomplish this, as you can cram in lots of fruits and green veggies, and even superfoods.

Here’s a recipe for an energizing smoothie that’s full of protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.


  • 1 banana
  • 1/3 cup blueberries
  • 1 big handful spinach
  • 1 tbsp cacao nibs
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp maca
  • ½ tsp spirulina
  • 1 tbsp flax seeds
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil

Optional: a few almonds or ½ scoop of rice protein powder

Cover with 2 cups water and blend.
