4 Ways to Naturally Boost Your Libido

A Holistic Approach

In anticipation of the romantic festivities that are intimated on Valentine’s Day, this month I’m sharing my top tips to help boost your libido. Whether or not you are a wholehearted participant of the holiday, these natural libido boosters are helpful at any time of year for you and your partner if the romantic interest is there, but the lust is lacklustre.

1. Reduce Stress

When we feel stressed, cortisol, our main stress hormone is elevated. High cortisol levels are one of the known causes of low libido. Reduce your stress levels as a couple or individually, by adding stress-reducing activities to your daily routine. These activities can include consistent, daily exercise, meditation, journaling, and deep breathing. Yoga is a fantastic way to incorporate both meditation and movement in one, plus it’s an activity you can do with your partner!

Stressful thoughts can completely diminish the mood because you are preoccupied and not focusing on the present moment with your partner. Staying in the present moment, also known as mindfulness, can positively impact many other areas of your life, alongside improving sexual interactions.

2. Zinc-Rich Foods

Zinc is essential for testosterone production, which is important for both men’s and women’s libido. Zinc also plays a part in blood pressure regulation, which is undoubtedly necessary for the physiological aspects of intercourse. Foods that are rich in zinc include oysters, pumpkin seeds, poultry, lamb, beef, cashews and chickpeas.

3. Maca

Maca is a root that is native to the Peruvian Andes and is well known for its effect on boosting libido because of its adaptogenic (balancing) effect on the HPA axis (hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal glands). It has a slightly sweet taste and blends well into smoothies, baked goods and chocolate.

4. Creativity and Fun

Adding creativity and fun in the bedroom is one way to ramp up your sex drive, but even playful and artistic activities can have a similar effect on your libido. This is because creative activities can strengthen the Sacral Chakra, which is the second energy centre of your chakras. The Sacral Chakra governs your reproductive system and sexuality. Not only can this impact your sex drive, but strengthening the Sacral Chakra can also strengthen your bond with your partner and boost your overall health.

Indulging in the libido boosters above sounds enticing, but please note that low libido can be caused by a variety of issues such as lack of sleep, poor diet, poor digestion, side effects of medication, circulation and nervous system issues, or other conditions that are unique to your constitution. Check in with your healthcare practitioner if low libido is an ongoing concern for individualized recommendations.
