4 Reasons Why you Should Indulge Over the Holidays

If your holiday gatherings are anything like mine, you’ll be enjoying tons of delicious food, wine and baked-once-a-year holiday treats. Does that sound right? It is also possible that you are completely dreading this time of year because you:

●      Want to lose weight

●      Always eat too much

●      Feel food guilt

●      Have dietary restrictions

I believe it is important to release these intense body and food insecurities, especially at this time of year! Below are 4 reasons why you should indulge over the holidays:


1. Reality Check: Ask yourself, what are the holidays really about? Is this time of year actually a time to beat yourself up over your food choices, or is it actually about spending time with loved ones? This is your reality check: this time of year is a time of celebration, not shame! Love yourself, love up your loved ones and enjoy this time of year for what it represents, including the delicious food!


2. Metabolism Boost: Have you been significantly restricting your calories to lose weight? Did you know that constantly eating in a deficit can be counterproductive for your metabolism, and can actually cause you to gain weight? Instead of focusing on the calories, eat the food and focus on getting more movement in during the holidays to boost your metabolism. Go for hikes, skate, go tobogganing, or whatever gets you moving if you’re not into the gym.


3. Enjoy Alternatives: Do you have dietary restrictions that your family doesn’t understand or accomodate? How frustrating! Thankfully, there are lots of alternative foods these days for almost any dietary need. Why not try making your own dishes that fit your sensitivities/allergies and bring them with you to your dinner parties? That way you can enjoy and share something special that also accommodates your needs!


4. Kickstart Healthier Eating: If you eat too much of something, you’ll eventually get sick of it. The same thing applies if you spend enough time feeling full and bloated with rich foods–You won’t feel your best. You can jump on the bandwagon with everyone else and make New Year’s resolutions, or do your own thing on your own schedule. Either way, commit to a fresh start to stay accountable in the New Year and fully enjoy the holidays.


At the end of the day, food is food. Remember that at this time of year, some people are concerned about whether they can put food on the table for their families. Let’s collectively practice gratitude for our delicious food choices, the abilities of our bodies to take us through our every day, and the caring people around us who love us unconditionally. Focus on these things and you may notice your holiday guilt melt away.
