Watch your energy rise, mental clarity astound and health challenges subside as you super-pack these raw foods into a daily meal. As a raw foodie, I’m tempted to say all three meals, everyday, but hey, I’m new here, so I’ll be gentle. Here are five ways to get raw food into your diet:
1. Pack ‘em into smoothies: Easiest and quickest way. Choose a sweet recipe for breakfast and a savoury one for later in the day (wait, that’s twice a day). Berries, cacao, flax, sesame, dates, chia, orange, and a couple of scoops of superfoods is how I start my day. Chocolate shake anyone?
2. Toss ‘em into salads: How many vegetables can you pack into coleslaw? Dust off the food processor to find out. Gather as many colours and flavours as you can find in the produce section, then pack and pulse, pack, pulse until you just can’t fit anymore. Drizzling your favourite dressing is next. Ah, the nutrients!
3. Juice ‘em: No fancy juicers necessary (though they do break cellular walls to access more nutrients). Use the blender you have and strain the juice using cheesecloth or a sprout/nut milk bag (available at upayanaturals.com). I love to add apple, carrot, ginger and cayenne with any variety of greens.
4. Rawluck ‘em: Attending a raw food potluck power-packs variety, culinary brilliance and social time with eager people ready to answer questions and hand out recipes. Visit MeetUp.com and search for a Toronto raw food potluck (check York, Etobicoke, Durham and other regions too!). It’s the best way to get inspired.
5. Superfood ‘em: Rare roots from the earth, sea vegetables and unthinkable amounts of greens are dehydrated at nutrient-preserving temperatures and then ground into powders, making nutrition easy on the go. Scoop into smoothies or water and you’ll be driving by the fast-food drive-through on the way to work.
