This month I am debunking beauty myths on how to beat the heat without damaging the environment and your health while implementing all of this summer’s hottest beauty trends.
Myth: One self-tanner fits all
Truth: Like searching for the perfect shade of foundation or concealer, your skin varies in color. In order to prevent an uneven finish, invest in two to three different shades.
Secret: As a finishing touch for your self-tanner, try applying an illuminator or pearlescent powder to your clavicles, the tops of your shoulders and down the front of your shins. These precisely placed highlights make the body appear longer, leaner and more toned.
Myth: Sunscreen prevents tanning
Truth: Most people avoid wearing sunscreen because they feel it prevents them from tanning. The purpose of your sun protection SPF (Sun Protection Factor, followed by a number) is to provide an invisible shield from both UVA (responsible for age spots, break down of collagen and wrinkles) and the harmful effects of UVB (contributes to the burning of skin). Moreover, a good SPF will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays without inhibiting a sun-kissed glow.
Secret: In warmer months where we are often exposed to a stronger UV index, your sunscreen must be reapplied every two to three hours for optimum protection.
Myth: More heat equals healthier hair
Truth: It is true that our scalp produces more oil during warmer months. This is due to hyper sebaceous glands (oil-producing glands) that metabolize a lot quicker, thus producing more oil. But the truth is that protein damage incurred by sun exposure roughens up hair’s surface so that it no longer reflects light.
Secret: To help maximize shine during styling, angle the blow dryer down so that the hair cuticle will lie flat.
