Mother Nature’s Little Helpers

Safe Treatments to Reverse Sun Damaged Skin, Naturally

The warm, lazy days of summer are fading and, for most of us, dry, dehydrated skin challenges are ahead. In summer, the heat and humidity can greatly affect our skin and the amount of damage done depends on our age and genetics.

Under-moisturized and over-exposed mature or dry skin types can be extra susceptible to photo-aging (the premature aging of skin from repeated sun exposure) or worse - skin cancer. The signs of photo-aging include orange peel texture, enlarged pores, dry scaly skin, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, age spots and chronic skin redness. While you can never completely reverse the damage, you can take steps to repair and rejuvenate skin with some very effective and natural spa facial treatments.

Peels: Peels are a quick and effective way to improve the appearance of your skin, with milder home versions that are safe and easy. A remarkably gentle acid peel that will noticeably improve the appearance of sun damaged and aged skin immediately, is the AFA (Amino Acid Filaggrin based Antioxidants) Peel. Filaggrin is a naturally occurring protein in our skin which retains hydration, and is also potent enough to reverse some photo-pigmentation. It repairs sun damage and has the added benefit of not causing photosensitivity like other peels.

Microdermabrasion: If your skin is too sensitive for peels, you can try Microdermabrasion.  This chemical-free deep exfoliation is excellent for reversing sun damage, as well as stimulating your skin’s collagen production.  Collagen, which decreases as we age, is responsible for keeping skin looking young, taut and healthy.

Two very healthy and hydrating forms of microdermabrasion are sea salt and saline water. Sea Salt Microdermabrasion improves circulation and hydrates tissue while smoothing out your complexion.  Aquabrasion uses saline water and has the added benefits of boosting hydration levels while rejuvenating skin. The cool jets of water make this a refreshing summer facial treatment and is excellent for inflamed skin at any time of the year.

IPL: For those who want instant results with no downtime, the most effective way of reversing the signs of aging (or any skin problem) is Intense Pulse Light. IPL is a non-invasive treatment that projects light onto the area of skin being repaired. It has proven to effectively revive skin by reducing the appearance of wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation, broken capillaries, and skin texturing due to enlarged pores. It also increases collagen production, improving the skin’s health and appearance.

LED: Another very effective but lesser known treatment is LED light treatment.  This is a very relaxing and gentle way to beautify skin naturally and can be added to any facial to repair damaged skin. It can also enhance the effectiveness of any of the above treatments.

Taking steps to revive your skin after a summer of sun damage is possible and this selection of natural options can accommodate anyone’s treatment preferences.
