Top Fall Food Trends

What You Need To Eat

Autumn is a season with crisp air, shorter days and great fall harvests. This is my favourite season to cook in; I love all the root vegetables and the move to more hearty meals. As with fashion, food has its trends and this season is shaping up to be a great one for foodies! Here are ten food trends for the fall.

Cauliflower: Cauliflower is the superfood of the fall! It is an excellent source of vitamin C which will help fight off the flu. It has compounds that may help prevent cancer and supports heart health. This superfood can be eaten raw or cooked, making it super versatile and it’s low in calories so you can indulge yourself.

Chia: Some of you might be familiar with chia pets, but did you know that those same chia seeds are great for our health? They are rich in soluble fibre which helps balance blood sugar, high in omega 3 fatty acid which is great for our skin and brain health, and are a great source of protein. Added to liquid they turn into a gel-like substance so add them to a smoothie or almond milk and fruit for a healthy snack.

Clean eating: This is one fall trend I’d like to see stick around! The standard North American diet has become full of processed convenience food that is lacking in nutrients and full of chemicals that we’re just not meant to eat. As we become more aware of the negative impact of this diet, we’re experiencing a revival of home cooking and using real, organic ingredients. Eating this way supports our health, nourishes our soul and simply tastes better. What could be better than that?

Coconut: Why are we seeing coconut products everywhere now? Because it’s a source of a healthy saturated fatty acid which protects the heart, helps balance blood sugar, lowers cholesterol and helps manage weight. Coconut water is high in electrolytes, the oil has a high smoke point making it great to cook with, and the sugar has a low glycemic  load making it a good alternative to sugar. So the next time you want to try something different, give coconut a go.

Fermentation: Fermented food has been around for years and it’s making a comeback. Food such as sauerkraut, kimchi and kombucha are great for providing your gut with good bacteria. This means better health to you! Although you can buy fermented products from your grocery store, it’s easy to ferment yourself and you end up with a more natural, nutrient-dense product and it’s fun to do.

Protein: Yes, of course protein has always been a necessary part of our diets but conventional sources tend to be contaminated with chemicals so we’re now choosing plant-based, cleaner sources for our protein.  Quinoa has become quite mainstream now and we are seeing more sources such as sunflower butter, spirulina and tahini on the grocery shelves. Health stores now offer hemp, pea, and brown rice as plant-based choices for protein powder. Give some of these proteins a try!

Tea: In the last few years tea has really grown in popularity, and with so many varieties it’s no wonder why. No matter which you choose, the health benefits are clear. Tea contains flavonoids which act as antioxidants boosting your immune system and are good for the heart. Tea has less caffeine than coffee but will still can give you a mental boost if you need it. Tea is great hot or cold but if you’d prefer not to drink it, it can be used to infuse desserts like cakes, cookies and gelato. The possibilities are endless!

Vegan iced treats: This is one of my favourite trends for the fall. It’s hard to say no to dessert and it seems especially hard when we’re trying to eat well. Well, now we don’t need to say no. We can create delicious iced treats using superfood ingredients like avocado, coconut milk, almond milk, bananas, and honey. Add some tasty fruit like blueberries or raspberries and these desserts are a nutritional powerhouse. It’ll taste so good no one will think there is anything missing, like refined sugar. Bonus: these treats are so healthy we can eat them for breakfast!

Vegan Pizza: Who doesn’t love a gooey hot piece of pizza? Unfortunately it usually comes with lots of processed meat and dairy which isn’t the healthiest choice. Now there are plenty of vegan options available to those of us who want a lighter and more nutritious version. Whether it’s a crust made from cauliflower or a topping of cashew cheese, these creative pizzas will have your taste buds singing.
