The First Annual Muskoka Yoga Festival
Four Questions with Program Director Justin B. Haley
Festivals are the MOST amount of fun you can have close to home: music, food, movement, connection and fresh new experiences! Muskoka Yoga Festival is the perfect setting for you to explore the landscape, your personal yoga practices, and connect with your community. We caught up with the Program Director for the Muskoka Yoga Festival, Justin B. Haley to ask a few questions:
What has been your most memorable yoga festival experience? The most memorable experience I’ve had at a yoga festival is attending two Yoga Festivals in Mont Tremblant, QC. The first year I was assisting my teacher Seane Corn and last year I taught my own workshop at the festival. I realized these festivals are a hotbed for connection with myself, with the outdoors, and especially with like-minded individuals.
Why does Toronto need a yoga festival? And why in Muskoka? Muskoka offers some of the most beautiful landscapes Canada has to offer. It is a geographical playground full of lakes, ravines, cliffs, rivers, forests, hills and islands. As Torontonians, we love our vibrant city, but I think many of us have been craving a yoga and music and movement festival in our own backyard. One that invites us to get out of the city to play and explore and share space in a collective, mindful experience. Muskoka is the perfect locale as it’s only two hours north of us and already such a vacation destination for many city residents.
What should we expect at Muskoka Yoga Festival? Can you walk us through a day? The festival weekend will be very full of connection and community! The weekend begins with live music, food and drinks on Friday evening at our special Meet & Greet party at the historic Muskoka Foundry in Bracebridge. Then wake up with us on Saturday morning to begin classes at 9am in Annie Williams Park by the Muskoka River. Our purposefully chosen vendor and food market will open for everyone at 11am on Saturday until our concert that evening on our Main Stage. There are over 30 classes to choose from throughout Saturday and Sunday - you make your own schedule! Once you have your particular wristband for the weekend, you’re granted access to the schedule, park experiences, music and market. Stay until the end on Sunday at 6pm so that you’re calm, connected and rejuvenated for the drive back to the city!
What advice would you give first time yoga festival participants? Be open to connecting! With new friends, the great outdoors, new music, fun movement practices and most importantly, yourself. Take the time to slow down and spend a little time on your own in nature. Lastly, make sure you balance your experiences by participating in both our physical, high-energy practices and the contemplative, cooling practices we offer on our schedule. But more than anything - have the most amount of fun possible on your mat, on the grass, on the water, with your friends, all weekend long!
Tickets are on sale now for all experiences. Be sure to check out our teaching line-up and connect with them on social media - they have a special gift for you when you purchase tickets!
