5 Tips for Cardiac Health

How about making a different kind of New Year’s resolution this year?  Instead of the usual focus on curbing poor habits, how about joining me in my personal recommitment for 2020…Leading with Heart!  With the New Year upon us, and Heart Health Awareness Month in February, there couldn’t be a better time to get a bit closer to the heart!

 

Do you take the time to truly listen to what your heart tells you, or are you more like me and often get caught up in the go-go-go of life? Is what you’re eating helping or hindering your heart? Are you strengthening your heart with frequent activity that you enjoy and that is sustainable for you? Are you loving and laughing with abundance?

 

Here are five heart-focused tips to get you started on Leading with Heart in 2020: 

 

  1. Feed your heart with healthy foods you love!  Eat more colourful fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains, all of which help fortify a healthy heart.  And don’t forget to fill up on fibre. 

 

  1. Your heart is a muscle, so strengthen it with purpose and care! Find an activity you enjoy and get to it!  You don’t have to run a marathon - even a brisk walk, any kind of dancing or simple stretching or yoga can bring great benefits to your heart!

 

  1. Take your heart health seriously.  See your doctor for regular checkups and get educated about potential risk factors based on your lifestyle or family history.  The Heart & Stroke Foundation offers helpful research-based information and useful tips: www.heartandstroke.com.

 

  1. Listen to your heart.  Take time out of your day for yourself and try to tune-in to what your heart is telling you by trying out a more mindful focus to help navigate your day.  Things like journaling, meditation or a nature walk can help relieve your mind and ease some of the stressors of daily life. 

 

  1. Practice patience!  Be patient with yourself and others as you adjust to different ways of being.  Leading with heart starts with being kind to yourself and it’s also a great way to help give your best to others too!
