Get A Head Start on Practicing Self Care

Yoga For Kids

We spend so much time in our adult life trying to improve our health, reach our fitness goals and find balance. But what if we had started our quest earlier in our lives? What if our introduction to practices like yoga and mindfulness had come when we needed it most, as children?  This next generation of kids is  growing up with far more stimulation and pressures, through video games, technology and social media, than any other generation before. Even two year olds are professional iPAD users. Perhaps that is why more recently, yoga and mindfulness are being presented as the most effective wellness prescription.

Research shows that through yoga and mindfulness meditation, children are able to deal with stress and self-regulate more effectively. Yoga provides training of mind and body to bring emotional balance. Children need such tools to listen inward to their bodies, feelings, and ideas.

If you’ve been trying to find a way to incorporate yoga into your kids lives but don’t know where to start, here is a list for you to ease in, while participating and engaging with them. You may even discover the benefits of creating your own practice:

VIDEO: Yoga download.com has videos that you can access from your computer, smartphone or tablets. Bring these videos anywhere and press play when you see your kids needing a little body/breath connection. The videos include yoga for beginners, for mom and babies, and yoga for toddlers to teen years.

With ten different exercises on CD and a book that outlines each practice, the meditations take the kids through body awareness and relaxation while talking their language.  With Eline’s soothing voice, your kids can choose a different meditation each day to wake or fall asleep to.

ART: Mindful colouring books: Mindfulness colouring books are all the rage for adults and kids alike. The beautiful artistry in most are suited towards the more mature artist, but finding some for kids to enjoy and colour can become a family exercise that you incorporate before bed, or in the morning chaos before school.  Find books with themes that will draw your kids in and keep them engaged for at least twelve minutes.
